So you're going to be a parent, hey? What a wonderful, but let's be honest, terrifying time of your life! Don't worry though, you're going to be absolutely fine, maybe a little sleep deprived but you will all survive and you will sleep again one day.

When you're a new parent, you'll be spending most of your time googling whether that burp was normal or should their poo REALLY be that colour?! But one thing you don't need to worry about is what to expect during your newborn photography session.

If you’re thinking about booking a newborn session but aren’t sure what to expect, here’s a guide for you lovely new parents to help you feel fully prepared and relaxed on the day so you can just focus on you, your baby and the memories we capture.

Hey I'm Liz, the owner and photographer at Elizabeth Faye Photography in Jackfield, Shropshire.

Newborns and toddlers are my absolute favourite to photograph. Newborns because they're just so gorgeous, and toddlers because I love the way they look at life.

I hope this blog is useful to you, and if you want to learn more about me you can do so here

Getting ready for your arrival at the studio

Sessions are usually planned for the morning at around 10.30 am. Try your best to avoid feeding before your drive, and save a feed for when you arrive at the studio. We want milk coma status for our photoshoot so that your baby is calm and sleepy. You can also just chill, enjoy a coffee and a biscuit and fill me in on your birth story.

What to dress your baby in

I recommend dressing your baby in a simple white bodysuit as that's what we'll start off in. I want to minimise changing your baby as much as possible as that can disturb them and make them fussy.

I photograph all my babies on white, and any other outfits or wraps we will use I provide. If you're going to another studio, it's worth checking but most studios provide props and outfits for newborns.

What the actual process is

We start off with a feed to settle your baby and get them nice and sleepy. Once they're asleep, I start posing them on the beanbag. I'll then transition through a variety of poses and wraps. Once I've finished with beanbag poses, we move onto photography you with your baby. We break regularly for any feeding or changing needs and go at baby's pace.

What about feeding, pooping and crying?

Honestly, don't stress. If your baby is cluster feeding and not settling, we'll work around that. If they're constantly pooping, we work around that too! When and if we do any naked poses, we'll try and time that just after they've been changed so we can avoid any accidents, but if they do happen it just is what it is. And if they're crying, we soothe. I can help, or Mum/Dad can take the time to settle them.
